books, earth, sterling silver milk teeth, brass filings (fools gold)

Beginnings Seems Easier brings together books, soil gathered from the garden of my childhood home, milk teeth cast in sterling silver and brass filings. The teeth, once temporary parts of the body, are remade in a material associated with permanence and value, placed on the earth, they sit between the organic and the permanant, while the soil suggests a material of re-generation and sustinance. The brass filings, often mistaken for gold, introduce a different uncertainty around value, imitation and appearance.

The books are held open in the middle, at pages 1 & 24, their numbers suggests a progression through time and a way of ordering experience, but the books remain open in the centre and cannot move forward or backwards. All of the materials carry different relationships to time and processes of decay and making permanant.
