Here and gone
Photographic prints made at Scottish Sculpture Workshop, 2017Here and Gone was made while on residency at Scottish Sculpture Workshop. Poppy heads, pine cones and seed pods were gathered from the surrounding landscape, cast in white wax, then returned to the places they came from. Once returned, the objects retain the shape of the original but appear as if cut out from the image.
I was interested in this attempt to re-place something, and in the impossibility of doing so completely. To return an object to its original setting is not necessarily to return it to its original state. The landscape continues to change around it, while the wax object holds a permanence that is unable to fully integrate. The work sits somewhere between presence and absence, extraction and insertion, and the desire for a return that can't be fulfilled.
